The History of Earls Hall...
The traditional origin of the name "Earls Hall" comes from the site of a hunting lodge named "the Erlis Hall" which was owned by the ancient Earls of Fife. At the end of the 14th century, the larger Barony of Leuchars (including the land on which Earls Hall stands) was sub-divided into three separate baronies, one of which was known as Moneypenny - to whom the lands were granted.
The barony belonged to the Moneypenny family for quite some time, with Lord Moneypenny's great-grandson taking up residence there in 1495. No structure exists from this period, although it is possible that the modest, small tower and low building across the courtyard opposite the castle may date back to the early 16th century.
